Transportable hypothermic machine perfusion for donor kidney

WAVES is used for the pulsatile hypothermic machine perfusion of donor kidneys for preservation, transportation, and eventual transplantation into a recipient.
WAVES is a two part system consisting of a control unit and a single use disposable cassette which contains the kidney and the machine preservation solution.
WAVES provides a sealed & insulated environment where a solution is pumped through the kidney at cold temperatures while the organ is being preserved outside the body. WAVES is portable allowing an organ to be perfused from time of recovery until transplantation. It is designed to travel unaccompanied by land or air, safely transporting the kidney across town or between countries (read instruction for use for complete details).

While the kidney is being perfused, WAVES records data on temperature, flow, pressure, and Renal Resistance (RR) every minute, offering clinicians additional data to evaluate the organ.

Activating the cooling pump

WAVES provides a regulated cold environment for the explanted kidney. The cold source used to create hypothermic conditions consists in a 5 liters water-and-ice slush, inserted in the reservoir.

Placing the cassette

The cassette and the unit are designed to be automatically aligned. The cassette only fits into the device in one position. Three latches allows to secure the cassette.

Loading the perfusate circuit

Add 1 liter of solution approved for kidney machine perfusion

Activating the hypothermic perfusate perfusion

WAVES cools the perfusate at about 5°C. The cold environment is automatically regulated by the system.

Use the disposable sterile drape to create an aseptic operating environment on the unit

Placing the kidney

The cassette is equipped with a removable platform offering two positions. The Up or benching position permits the user to have easy access to the kidney, particularly during placement for perfusion. The Down or perfusion position must be used during the perfusion.

Setting perfusion pressure – automatic mode

With the automatic mode the perfusion pressure is maintained at a set pressure during 6 hours.

Setting perfusion pressure – manual mode

With manual mode the user adjusts continuously the perfusion pressure during the procedure.

Closing the system

Once closed the system houses the organ cassette safely, in sealed and sterile environment for the transport.

Checking perfusion parameters

The interface allows the user to monitor continuously systolic, mean, and diastolic pressure, flow, temperature and renal resistance.

Changing perfusion mode

The perfusion mode can be changed from automatic to manual and vice versa at any time during the procedure.

Checking batteries charge

Battery operation lasts up to 24 hours with four fully charged batteries.

Locking/unlocking screen

Screen is to be locked for transport to prevent any unintentional operation through the interface.

Ending perfusion

Perfusion data (temperature, flow, pressure, and Renal Resistance) are automatically saved at the end of the perfusion procedure.

Transferring the perfusion data

The WAVES control unit has a USB port for data transfer and storage onto a flash drive on the back of the unit.

Network the perfusion data

The WAVES system permits the user to view the current perfusion data on a network or smartphone when the unit is properly connected to a network. The WAVES has an Ethernet port on the back of the unit for network connection.

Draining the ice reservoir

WAVES provides a convenient automated draining of the slush water-ice after perfusion.

Cleaning up after perfusion

Bleach solution in reservoir, drain, wipe of the reservoir, and dry. Spray and wipe of the unit

Swapping batteries

WAVES draws power from one battery at a time, so you may swap out depleted batteries for fully charged ones without interrupting perfusion.

Retrieving a perfusate sample

Attach a syringe to remove a perfusate sample for testing purposes
